never enjoyed the rituals of discipline.
'Ah, captain,' the Doctor said. 'I'm sorry if we've caused you any
inconvenience...'
Basic courtesy. Korzen knew better than to answer. 'You don't seem
too well,' she commented as she slid into her seat and started the attack
on her food. She had never shaken off the need to eat fast and
furiously against starvation.
'So, Doctor,' she asked at last, 'what exactly had been going on
when we found you?'
The Doctor, who was hardly touching his meal, looked up, his face a
mask of discomfort and surprised guilt.
'Ah, well,' he said, 'that may be -'
'We're travellers,' Nyssa cut across him bluntly, 'from another
planet. The TARDIS, our ship, was -' she paused - 'brought down into
the sea.'
Korzen was finding, to her surprise, that the girl was the voice of
the couple. She hadn't worked out what the Doctor was yet. Maybe the
heart?
The Doctor seemed mortified, embarrassment outstripping his pain.
He exchanged soft words with his companion, too soft for Korzen to
pick up.
'But, Doctor,' Nyssa said, 'you've always told me that...'
'Enough,' Korzen said firmly. 'We must look rustic, but we know
what goes on up there -' She jabbed a hard brown finger towards the
ceiling, towards the sky.
'Good, good,' the Doctor said, his voice slipping as his brow creased
with renewed pain.
'I think you're suffering...' Brunner made to begin a dreadful-
warning diagnosis.
'You need to lie down,' Korzen interjected, rising. She helped the
Doctor up, leading him out and through the cramped passages towards
the cabin she had set aside for him.
'This is very kind of you,' he murmured, almost an apology. Korzen
watched as he sank into a peaceful stupor. His body wasn't still. So, her
guess had been right. He wasn't remotely human.
